Sometimes to emphasize the right way to do something, it can be instructive to look at the wrong way. With that in mind, here are a five pointers for how not to look good on your resume and how not to get that interview:
- formatting - Don’t worry about using much white space on the page. After all, the most important thing is to cram as much information on each page as possible. Use a smaller font if you are tight on space. Hiring managers are almost never in a hurry; they are usually more than willing to slow down and wade through a resume dense with verbage.
- Correctness - If we see things often enough, we stop paying close attention, and things like misspelled or incorrect contact information
- Don’t worry about indicating what your goal is. Just jump from your contact information at the top of the page to your employment history. This keeps all your options open. Why limit yourself?
- Include plenty of information, even if it takes 5 pages. It’s important for any and all potential employers to know every detail of your history…everything down to those summer jobs in high school.
- Don’t worry about “tuning” your resume to match an employer’s openings. Just send the same resume to all employers. If they don’t take the time to project how your background and skills will benefit their organization, they obviously don’t deserve someone of your caliber anyway.
OK…so much for how not to prepare a resume.
